From Barriers to Assets: Culturally Responsive Therapy with Black Families

This workshop is designed to enhance understanding of culturally responsive practices with Black families. Participants will explore historical context, societal factors, and changing family dynamics influencing Black families and their mental health. The workshop will address barriers Black families face in seeking mental health services and strategies for supporting their engagement. It will also help equip therapists with skills to support Black families from intake to termination.

Learning Objectives: 

Upon completion of this webinar, participants will be able to: 

  • Discuss significant historical context and current issues impacting the mental health of Black family
  • Identify strategies to engage the Black community in mental health care
  • Learn key culturally responsive therapeutic practices with Black families from the intake process to termination of services

Presenters

Felicia J. Holloway, PhD, LPC-S, LMFT-S, AAMFT Supervisor, is an Assistant Professor in the COAMFTE Accredited Marriage and Family Therapy Graduate Program at Texas A&M University-Central Texas. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor-Supervisor, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist-Supervisor in the state of Texas, and holds the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy Approved Supervisor designation.

She has been a passionate student-centered higher education academic for over 12 years. She also maintains a culturally responsive private practice focusing on supervising emerging clinicians and supporting families navigating parenting challenges, trauma, depression, and anxiety. She has held various positions on the board of the Texas Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (TAMFT) including Member at Large. She is currently an active member of the TAMFT Ethics and Social Justice Committee.
Latasha Burnett, LMFT-S, EMDR Certified Therapist, is motivated and driven to see individuals and families lead healthy and productive lives. She is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Supervisor in Texas and Oklahoma and is currently a therapist at The Women’s Center of Tarrant County. Latasha also has a private practice where she provides supervision to LMFT associates and provides consultation to clinicians seeking EMDR certification. Her mental health career spans more than 23 years, during which she has worked in inpatient, outpatient, private practice, and school settings to bring awareness and healing to individuals and families overcoming the devastating effects of trauma and adversity. She has specialties in the area of trauma therapy with children, teens, adults, and families. She also specializes in working with Autistic children, teens, and adults levels 1-3.
 
Latasha graduated from Cameron University with a master’s degree in Behavioral Sciences. She also holds a master’s degree in Applied Behavioral Analysis with a focus on Autism from Ball State University. She merges mental health therapy and behavioral therapy to provide the individuals she serves with the best of both worlds. She is a Nationally Certified Trauma Focused- Cognitive Behavioral Therapist, an EMDRIA approved EMDR Certified Therapist, an EMDRIA approved EMDR Consultant in Training, an EMDR Basic Training Facilitator, a Mindfulness Certified Trainer, and a Certified Trauma Conscious Yoga Method Therapist. Latasha is passionate about bringing more EMDR-trained clinicians of color, especially Black clinicians, into the field. She is also working to bring awareness to the benefits of using EMDR with families and with Autistic clients.
